Where is Reason?
It must have been a slow news day in Canada last week. What story lead off many news casts and had a prominent place in the papers. believe it or not is was a story about a dinner planned in Toronto next month by a group called The Canadian Shooting Sports Association. At this dinner they plan to raffle off a rare Beretta handgun to raise money for their group. They planned to invite conservative MP Garry Breitkreuz to speak at this affair. What is the big problem you ask? While the fact that the group is an advocate for gun owners and shooters here in Canada should be your first clue. The anti-gun hystericals believe anything to do with guns is wrong, that they all must be outlawed, never mind having a dinner to promote shooting sports in our country. heavan's forbide that is beyond the pale. How dare they have such a thing. there should be a law.
it seem that a few members of the federal opposition and local politicians got wind of this dinner. They strongly condemed such a outrage. They said it was insenitive to have a pro-gun event in Toronto, which has had problems with gun violence over the last few years. I guess Toronto is the only place in Canada that has had problems with violence and crime. Where should they hold their event than, maybe the artic circle, very little crime there I guess.. What about the legitimate gun owners and shooters in the GTA? Don't they have the right to have events in their city that interests them. Secondly the problem of gun violence is not the fault of legit gun owners and sportsman. It is a failure of law enforcement to stop the smuggling of fire arms from the states and the failure of them to control mainly gang violence in their city. Also the courts have to get tough with people who use a firearm in the commission of a crime. we are suppose to have a law that adds 10 years to a sentence on top of the time for the crime they committed. This does not seem to be applied in many cases.
Secondly this event is put on by a legal sportsman's club. They are raffling a legal firearm to people who are licensed to own and use firearms. The raffle is not open to any body off the street, so criminals and politicians need not apply. Do these politicians not have anything better to do than haress law abiding gun owners. I guess it is easier to go after hunters and shooters than real criminal, because these ruffians may not agree with people taking their firearms and shoot back. I am speaking of course of those criminals. They can also make all the people sleep better knowing that they are really doing something about gun violence by going after target shooters. Some great logic there. Don't they have anything better to do, considering that we are in one of the worst economic down turns since the great depression. Speaking of money these so called evil gun groups bring money to the cities that they have their events in. I guess it is ok to bring despicable anti-democratic groups into their city, like the Liberal party, but sorry to you sports shooters you are too high of a crime risk.
Thirdly as i said before this group supports the honourable shooting sports. So it makes perfect sense that they would have prizes at their events that are fire arm related. If they were a photography club, they would probably raffle off a camera. The hardware fanciers of canada better be careful. They may try to shut you down too. You know a hammer or prunning hook could be considered a dangerious weapon. We can not have the unwashed masses having potential weapons can we.
The deputy mayor of hogtown; Joe Pantalone really had some brilliant things to say. First of all he said " 30% to 40% of legal guns are used illegal activities". Man revenue Canada better check this guy's tax returns a real teller of tall tales.. As Joseph Goebbels, the nazi minister of Propaganda( another pro-gun control type) said "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually believe it". I just love how these windbags just throw out facts with no basis in reality. The Toronto Guns and Gangs Task Force, a group within the Toronto government reports that the figure is closer to 5.7%. Furthermore according to stastics Canada , between the years 1997-2005 only 2.27% of murders were committed with regristered firearms. Ever death is a tragic event, but it is not this huge problem, Pantalone makes it out to be.
Another gem from the deputy major: "To simply have an association and a member of parliament of the governing party be encouraging this really doesn't make any sense' Sounds like his lame agruement, doesn't make any sense at all. Again the thing they are encouraging is legal all across this dominion of ours. Secondly MP Breitkreuz is very involved with the issue of gun control. In fact he has a bill (C-301) in the commons to revoke the huge ineffective blackhole called the gun regristry. they can not forgive him for that. So does it not make perfect sense to invite a legislator involved in gun issues to speak at a gun groups dinner, duh! I don't think it would be unusually for an MP or minister of fisheries to speak at a professional fishman's convention, so whats the difference? Is this not a democracy after all, where our MPS can go to any legal function or conference they want.
There is much double standards here too. I recall during the period when the liberals were setting up their new gun legislation in the 1990's. They were constantly consorting with anti-gun groups. Many of these groups were consulting and advising them on the new laws. For instance Wendy Cukur of The Coalition for Gun Control was constantly in contact with the government; putting in her two cents. I have no problem with that, that is what democracy is all about. Why do the anti-gun types decry this fact when there is a relationships or contacts between politicians and pro-gun groups? What is good for the goose, is good for the gander.
So in the end everything turned out just peachy. Mr Breitkreuz declined his invitation. The shooting club withdrew their invitation so as not to get the MP in anymore hot water. O thank God for that I really sleep soundly now knowing that they have taken a bite out of gun crime. I heard that the powers that be in the conservative party told him in that he could not go. That does not sound like the party i voted for. Do you not believe in democracy and free speech. Actions speak louder than words. Where is the party that will represent the rights and concerns of the legal shooter and hunters. it seems like the conservative maybe starting to set us adrift for all important illogical votes.
